| 1. Incontinence Program
- Do you leak urine?
- Do you need to go to the bathroom more frequently?
Men can suffer from a variety of problems with passing urine especially as they get older.
Some signs of a problem are:
- A desire to pass urine more frequently especially at night
- An urgent desire to pass urine
- Leakage of urine (overflow incontinence)
- Difficulty starting, or a weak/slow stream
Men can experience problems with incontinence for these reasons:
- Prostate enlargement
- Weak pelvic floor muscles
- A chronic cough, such as a smokers cough or chronic bronchitis or asthma
- Being overweight
- Lack of general fitness and persistent heavy lifting
It is normal for the prostate to enlarge as men get older and this may cause an obstruction. If this is large enough urinary retention occurs which can then lead to overflow incontinence (leaking). This may require surgery called a prostatectomy.
Prostate Cancer pre and post surgery can also result in some degree of urine leakage.
The Pelvic Floor Muscles form a sling or hammock between the pubic bone and the tail bone and support the pelvic organs (bladder and bowel). They can be weakened by ageing, lack of use, surgery and injury. This can also cause loss of urine.
SEEK HELP approximately 5% - 15% of men undergo prostate surgery are incontinent both pre and post surgery. Don't let this treatable condition impact on your quality of life.
